Run with the Heroes RGV 5K

The Harlingen Police Department hosted a new event this September. The 5K benefited the Ronald McDonald House and Special Olympics.

The new police chief brought over the idea from his former job in Austin. I heard later he anticipated 100 to 200 participants. They surpassed that goal.

I believe there were about 500 people who signed up. Go RGV!

Because I'm stubborn and wanted to complete my long run, I needed to sneak in a few more miles before the 5K. So I ran to the start line.

I got there early, since I was volunteering at the sign-up table. And that's where I got an unexpected compliment.

Another volunteer asked me, "Are you a professional runner?"

God bless her. I couldn't help but laugh, as I thanked her for the comment and explained I was not.

As for the run, it was great to see so many participants. Several law enforcement agents were there competing against each other.
I think there might've been one mile marker. Since I have my watch, I don't worry about that too much, but it's always reassuring to seem them.

I enjoyed the route. It covered the city lake and downtown. There was Chick-Fil-A and free pizza. (I won a plush cow.)

I noticed there was some delay when handing out awards. I saw part of the crew huddled over a laptop and scribbling numbers down. Later, on Facebook, I learned a vehicle ran over the sensors and lost all the participant data.

Part of it was later recovered.

I usually don't stay long after I finish, but since I was volunteering, I got to see the raffle giveaway. I tried to get one of the freebies they were tossing at the crowd, but I never have much luck with those.

In the end, there wasn't really a reason to stay. The organizers had this down. They were packed up and ready to go. I look forward to next year's run.

Six Months Later

In March, I bought a new pair of Hokas. Six months later, I got another pair.

How often a runner should change shoes is a matter of some debate. In this case, I don't think it was running that led to the need for another pair.

I have plantar fascia. To avoid pain during the day, I started wearing my Hokas daily.

I have to tell you it was super annoying. First, I hated wearing bright neon green shoes to work. There's no way to make those blend in with work clothes.

Second, it felt like I was wearing the shoes 24/7. I was annoyed every time I had to put them back on.

Around August, I found some affordable gray Hokas for daily use. But by then, I already added a lot of miles to my running shoes.

If I don't look, it won't hurt

After my long run, I usually eat, shower and change. But I had a volunteer meeting in the morning. Instead of my usual routine, I finished my run and got into my car to drive to the meeting.

Something caught my eye, and I looked down at my legs. I then immediately regretted doing that.

I was bleeding. I felt an ache that I sometimes do after my long run. But because I shower and change, I never actually see my legs.

Ignorance was bliss.

Former high school water girl (really) finally running.

I started this blog as part of my participation with LLS Team In Training. I moved it to this site to continue my (still slow) running adventures in South Texas.
